A wave of vehicle recalls involving steering components, electric-vehicle batteries and electronic control systems has put carmakers' safety procedures and customer-response strategies under scrutiny, as manufacturers race to identify faults and limit risks to motorists.
Recent cases involving Volkswagen, Audi and Toyota highlight how problems can range from ageing mechanical components to software faults in newer electrified vehicles.
In the United States alone, the reported 300 recall campaigns covering an estimated 32.4 million vehicles had been recorded by Oct 6 this year, according to data compiled from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filings.
Steering Risk Triggers Major Recall
Volkswagen Group announced a global recall involving about 2.86 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles over a potentially faulty screw connection in the steering system.
The affected models include selected Volkswagen Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy vehicles, as well as the Audi Q3, produced across specified manufacturing periods.
The concern is that corrosion could cause a screw securing the steering gear to break, potentially resulting in a loss of steering control.
Volkswagen and Audi have reportedly said the problem can develop under certain environmental conditions, including exposure to road salt.
Audi described its action as a precautionary recall after internal inspections identified the potential risk. The affected component will be replaced with a more corrosion-resistant part, with the repair expected to take about an hour.
Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority has been investigating the issue. No related incidents involving damage or injury had been reported in the information published on the recall.
EV Batteries Pose A Different Challenge
Volkswagen has also announced a separate recall involving 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States, covering model years 2023 to 2026.
The manufacturer said a potential high-voltage battery problem could lead to thermal propagation - a chain reaction that can cause a battery fire - when certain affected batteries are charged above 80 per cent.
While the company works on a permanent remedy, owners have been advised to limit charging to 80 per cent.
Volkswagen said it was continuing its investigation and had sought further clarification from its battery-cell supplier.
The case illustrates the additional complexity of managing recalls in electric vehicles, where battery-related concerns may require interim operating restrictions while engineers establish the cause and develop a fix.
Toyota has also recalled about 31,000 model-year 2026 RAV4 plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States.
A fault in the electronic control unit for the plug-in hybrid system could cause it to shut down while driving, potentially leading to a loss of power at higher speeds.
Toyota's remedy is a software update at authorised dealerships, free of charge to owners.
The company said affected customers would be notified and asked to return their vehicles for the update.
Recalls Span Hardware And Software
Other recent US campaigns underline the range of issues manufacturers must manage.
Jeep has recalled selected Grand Cherokee models over rear coil springs that may have been installed incorrectly and could detach.
General Motors has also addressed rear-view camera faults, while Ford has recalled vehicles over potentially unsecured fuel-tank straps.
The remedies vary according to the fault: some require physical replacement of parts, while others can be resolved through software updates.
In each case, manufacturers must identify affected vehicles, notify owners and ensure the repair is completed.
The scale of the campaigns does not mean all vehicles from a particular brand are affected, nor do recalls announced overseas automatically apply to Malaysian units.
Owners should check official notices using their vehicle identification number and contact an authorised dealer if their vehicle is covered.
Local Brands Face Their Own Tests
In Malaysia, Chery has announced a recall campaign for affected Omoda 5 C and H variants following an incident involving the vehicle's rear suspension.
The company said owners could check their vehicle identification numbers and that inspections and necessary component replacements would be carried out without charge, while the authorities investigate.
Honda Malaysia, meanwhile, recently clarified a discrepancy in marketing material for the City E variant, confirming that it uses rear drum brakes rather than the solid-disc brakes stated in some materials.
The company said it was updating the information. The Honda case was a specification correction, not a safety recall.
For the industry, the challenge is not simply to announce a recall, but to communicate the risk clearly, provide a timely remedy and ensure affected owners act.
As vehicles become more software-dependent and electrified, effective monitoring and transparent follow-through will remain central to maintaining customer confidence.
