Ri-Bhoi, Oct 14: University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque has taken responsibility for providing free education to Meghalaya’s rising Pencak Silat athlete Rimchi Sangma, extending support to the young sportsperson ahead of the 6th Junior and 21st Senior World Pencak Silat Championship 2026 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Scheduled from December 5 to 12, the championship will see Rimchi prepare to represent India on the international stage. Hoque has assured her of educational assistance and other support from the university, helping her pursue her sporting ambitions without the burden of educational expenses.
During Rimchi’s visit to USTM, the Chancellor welcomed her parents and martial arts coach, acknowledging their role in supporting her journey. Garo and Khasi students from Meghalaya studying at the university also met Rimchi and wished her success at the upcoming championship.
The university’s commitment is expected to provide fresh encouragement to Rimchi as she balances her sporting career with her education.
Speaking to the media, Rimchi expressed gratitude to Hub News and senior journalist Vishma for highlighting her story and helping her connect with people willing to support her.
“Hub News and Sir Vishma have done an extraordinary job for me. After my story went viral in the news and on social media, I began receiving offers of help and support from different people. I am truly grateful to Sir Vishma and every member of the Hub News team for standing by me and helping me move closer to my dreams,” Rimchi said.
Her story has drawn attention to the challenges faced by talented athletes from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Coverage of her achievements and circumstances has helped bring her needs to the attention of individuals and institutions willing to extend assistance.
With USTM’s assurance of free education and support from well-wishers, Rimchi can focus on her preparations for the world championship in Uzbekistan while continuing to pursue her academic goals.
