Russia Suffers 50,000 Casualties in 1 Month – NATO

Russia suffered more than 50,000 military casualties in Ukraine during September, including as many as 28,000 troops killed, according to an assessment by a senior NATO military official.

The figure covers both killed and wounded personnel and represents one of Russia’s heaviest months of the war, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, Oct. 11.

The unnamed official, who discussed the assessment on condition of anonymity, estimated that Ukrainian forces suffered approximately 5,000 casualties over the same period.

That would put Russia’s total monthly losses at roughly 10 times Ukraine’s. Neither estimate could be independently verified, and Ukrainian authorities rarely disclose comprehensive figures for their own military casualties.

Russian troops sent into “kill zones”

The NATO official attributed Russia’s heavy losses partly to its continued attempts to advance through heavily defended Ukrainian positions.

Russian commanders have been sending troops into what the official described as “kill zones” covered by armed drones, landmines, artillery, and other defensive systems.

Despite the cost in personnel, Moscow continues offensive operations along several sections of the front.

At the same time, Ukrainian forces have intensified long-range strikes against Russian oil refineries, data centers, and other facilities supporting Moscow’s war effort. Ukrainian ground operations have also reportedly returned more than 125 square kilometers (48 square miles) of territory to Kyiv’s control.

The track record has been far from reassuring, with previous deals coming to nothing as Kyiv and Moscow remain at odds over the terms, despite Trump’s promises.

The NATO assessment broadly corresponds with figures released by Ukraine’s General Staff, which estimated that Russia lost 46,230 personnel in September. The Ukrainian military did not specify how many were killed and how many were wounded.

Russia’s total losses near 1.55 million

By Wednesday, Oct. 7, Ukraine’s military estimated that Russia’s total personnel losses since the beginning of the full-scale invasion had reached nearly 1.55 million.

That figure also combines troops killed and wounded and has not been independently confirmed.

Russia does not publish comprehensive information about military casualties or recruitment. Moscow’s last detailed official death toll was released during the early months of the invasion and is widely considered outdated.

Estimates from Ukraine, NATO, and Western intelligence agencies vary because they use different sources and methodologies, while distinguishing between deaths, injuries, and troops who later return to service remains difficult.

War places growing pressure on Moscow

The rising casualties come as the Kremlin spends heavily to recruit personnel and sustain offensive operations.

Russia’s defense expenditure is expected to approach 17 trillion rubles, or approximately $199 billion, in 2026 – around 40% higher than the government’s original plan announced at the end of 2025, according to Bloomberg.

German Federal Intelligence Service Chief Martin Jäger said last week that President Vladimir Putin’s war had created a situation in which ending the invasion without paying a domestic political price was becoming increasingly difficult.

The Kremlin has continued relying on large enlistment bonuses, regional recruitment campaigns, and pressure on vulnerable groups to replace battlefield losses while avoiding another publicly declared nationwide mobilization.
