One person has died and three others have been rescued after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State, with fears that additional victims may still be trapped beneath the debris.
Emergency responders have continued search and rescue operations at the scene, working to locate anyone who may have been caught in the collapse.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received a distress call at 12:10 a.m. on Friday and immediately deployed its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base.
The team arrived at the location two minutes later and discovered that the two-storey structure, which was still under construction, had collapsed.
Initial assessments indicated that construction workers might have been inside the building when it came down, prompting the immediate commencement of rescue efforts.
Rescuers began clearing the rubble and searching for survivors while taking precautions to protect both the victims and emergency personnel involved in the operation.
An excavator was also deployed to assist in removing debris and accessing sections of the collapsed structure where people were believed to be trapped.
Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that three adult males had been pulled from the rubble, while one person was recovered dead.
The rescued victims received emergency medical attention from LASEMA paramedics and personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transported to a hospital for further treatment.
Other agencies involved in the operation include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Alagbon Division.
