History is being made this Sunday, and it is not about touchdowns or interceptions. JJ Jansen will take the field against the Philadelphia Eagles to play his 282nd career game, a number that no other long snapper in NFL history has ever reached. While most fans forget the specialist who snaps the ball between his legs, Jansen has turned a tiny job into a massive legacy. He is not just playing; he is proving that consistency beats flash every single time.
Per NBC Sports, this milestone breaks a tie with Trey Junkin, the man Jansen watched as a kid in Arizona. The 40-year-old has spent his entire regular-season career with the Panthers, a rarity in a league where players jump ship for every extra dollar. He started in 2009 after a trade, and he has been the anchor ever since. This is not luck. It is a skill set so rare that only a handful of men in the world can do it at this level.
A Father’s Lessons on the Grass
Jansen did not learn this craft in a fancy camp or a high-tech facility. He learned it from his dad on a patch of grass in their backyard. The technique required for snapping a football is so precise that a bad snap can cost a team a field goal. Jansen told Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, “I still remember we practiced in the same way every single time,” recalling the hours they spent in front of a tree. He stood at one end, and his dad stood 15 yards away. They had good nights and bad nights, but they kept going. That grind built a player who refuses to quit.
Former kicker John Kasay, who held the Panthers’ games played record before Jansen, sees something special in this work ethic. “I think he never got bored with it,” Kasay said. The job is repetitive, but Jansen treats every snap like it matters. He has played 281 games for Carolina alone, and he is still going strong. If he plays every game this season, he will finish with 294 games, placing him 18th on the all-time list for any player. That is a testament to a player who never lost his edge.
The Ultimate Specialist
Long snappers do not get the glory, but they get the job done. Jansen knows that the only stat that matters for his position is games played. As long as you do not mess up, you keep your spot. He has done that for 17 years. He once joked about watching Junkin warm up on first down, thinking the Cardinals were so bad that the special teams guys had to be ready early. “I always thought it was really funny that the punter and the long snapper would warm up on first down because back then the Cardinals were terrible,” Jansen said. Now, he is the one setting the standard that others will chase for decades.
With the next game set for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET against the Eagles, Jansen is ready to add another chapter to his story. He is showing no signs of slowing down, even as he passes the 40-year mark. This is what loyalty looks like in the NFL. He is not just a player; he is a record holder who earned every single one of his snaps. Keep pounding, JJ.
