Runners at the Kimberley Big Hole Marathon could face scorching heat this weekend, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s and possible thunderstorms on Sunday.
The Diamonds & Dorings Kimberley Big Hole Marathon will take place at Kimberley Boys High School in the Northern Cape on Saturday, 24 October, and Sunday, 25 October.
What the weather look like this weekend
According to SAWS, Saturday’s forecast points to a maximum temperature of around 32°C.
Sunday could be even hotter, with temperatures reaching approximately 35°C and a 30% chance of thunderstorms.
However, the thunderstorms might develop in the afternoon.
Runners and spectators should keep an eye on updated forecasts, particularly as temperatures rise during the day.
When will the races take place?
The half-marathon will kick off Saturday’s programme at 06:00, followed by the 10 km and 5 km races at 06:30.
The main 42.2 km marathon will start at 05:30 on Sunday.
The early start times should allow many participants to complete their races before the hottest part of the day.
The marathon also serves as a qualifying event for the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon.
How could the weather affect runners?
Running in hot weather can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.
Participants should drink water regularly, make use of hydration stations and pay attention to signs of overheating, including dizziness, nausea and unusual fatigue.
Thunderstorms could also pose a risk if lightning develops while runners are still on the course.
Participants should follow instructions from race organisers and seek safe shelter if thunderstorms approach.
Weather conditions can change, particularly when thunderstorms are possible.
Race organisers will determine whether weather conditions require changes to the programme.
