The University Basic School (UBS), Legon, has won the 2026 Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Food Research Institute Quiz Competition, securing its third consecutive title with 70 points.
UBS finished ahead of Christ the King International School, which scored 63 points, The Ridge Church School with 50 points, and Armed Forces Basic School with 47 points.
The competition was held at the CSIR-Food Research Institute’s conference hall in Shiashie, Accra, as part of activities to commemorate World Food Day, observed annually on October 16.
The latest victory extends UBS’s winning streak since it first participated in the competition in 2024, having also emerged champion in the 2024 and 2025 editions.
The school’s performance followed two weeks of intensive preparation covering general science, basic mathematics, current affairs, general knowledge and the contributions of CSIR to national development.
The team also drew on its experience from previous editions, while classroom instruction, particularly in Mathematics and Science, helped the learners apply concepts confidently during the competition.
The 2026 team comprised eight Basic Eight learners: Abena Oppomea Ossei Kwakye, Aseda Oye Dartey, Joanel Lamptey, Amarteikai Amarquaye, Karis Heward-Mills, Millchelle Antwi, Jonas Dodge and Kwame Asomantse.
The school’s achievement has been attributed in part to the commitment of teachers who have coached the quiz team since 2024.
They are Mr Anthony Amoah Baidoo, Mr Enoch Lamptey and Mr Ebenezer Ocran, with additional support from Ms Ethel Agyemang during this year’s competition.
The school has competed against several institutions since joining the contest, including Achimota Basic School, PRESEC Staff Basic School, La Bawaleshie Basic School, The Ridge Church School, Christ the King International School and Armed Forces Basic School.
Board Chair of the University Basic School, Prof. Collins Badu Agyemang, has commended the learners, coaches and wider school community for their contributions to the achievement.
He also acknowledged the school’s head, deputy heads, coordinators and staff for helping create an environment that supports effective teaching, learning and academic performance.
Prof. Agyemang urged the school community to build on the success, stressing the importance of teamwork, commitment and continuous improvement.
He said the achievement should serve as a springboard for further progress in academic performance, learner development and institutional growth.
UBS’s third consecutive victory highlights the role of dedicated coaching, effective classroom instruction and teamwork in preparing learners for academic competitions.
The result also underscores the value of co-curricular activities in developing critical thinking, confidence and intellectual curiosity among pupils.
The school says its focus will be on sustaining the momentum through continued investment in talent development and academic excellence.
