Delivering a strong message on accountability in public life, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Friday asserted that elected representatives must remain answerable to the people and win public confidence through tangible development work rather than mere promises. He emphasised that public service, responsiveness and commitment to grassroots development should define the true character of a people's representative.
The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Community Hall at Vaishnabtila in Amtali, a facility built under the initiative of Agartala Municipal Corporation's Ward No. 49. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Datta, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, local corporator Harisadhan Debnath, and several other distinguished guests.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Saha stressed that democratic governance rests on the trust reposed by citizens in their elected representatives. He said that people cast their votes with hope and expectations, and therefore it becomes the moral responsibility of those elected to remain connected with the public, understand their concerns and work sincerely for the welfare and development of their constituencies.
The Chief Minister observed that whether it is a local body election, Assembly election or parliamentary poll, accountability must remain at the heart of public service. Making promises during election campaigns, he noted, is relatively easy, but fulfilling those commitments through concrete development initiatives is the true test of leadership.
In a pointed remark directed at public representatives, Dr Saha said they should periodically ask themselves what answers they would have for voters if they failed to work for the people or contribute meaningfully to the development of their areas. According to him, public trust is not earned through rhetoric but through visible results and continuous engagement with citizens.
Highlighting the importance of development-oriented governance, the Chief Minister said that progress should not remain confined to official records and government documents. Its benefits must reach ordinary people and improve their daily lives. He emphasised the need for sustained attention towards roads, drinking water, electricity, sanitation, social infrastructure and other essential public services that directly affect citizens.
He further stated that elected representatives must maintain regular interaction with residents, listen to their grievances and initiate timely interventions based on the realities on the ground. Such an approach, he said, would strengthen public confidence in both elected representatives and the administration.
Dr Saha also called upon the younger generation and public leaders alike to draw inspiration from the lives and ideals of the country's great personalities. He said that values such as patriotism, dedication, social responsibility and commitment to nation-building remain as relevant today as ever and should guide public life and governance.
Referring to the legacy of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee, after whom the community hall has been named, the Chief Minister said that the occasion served as a reminder of the importance of national consciousness, public service and dedication towards society. He noted that such institutions should not merely function as physical structures but also as centres that inspire collective community engagement and social development.
Dr Saha also highlighted that the state government has been pursuing a development-oriented agenda inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a focus on ensuring that the benefits of growth reach every section of society. Achieving this objective, he said, requires close coordination among elected representatives, government departments and citizens.
The newly inaugurated community hall is expected to provide residents of Vaishnabtila and surrounding areas with a dedicated venue for social, cultural and community programmes. Local residents believe the facility will play an important role in strengthening social interaction, promoting cultural activities and serving the needs of the community for years to come.
