Distributed in India by Warner Bros. Pictures India, Universal Pictures’ Sense and Sensibility promises to offer a fresh, witty, and relatable take on Jane Austen’s classic tale of sisterhood and romance, hitting Indian cinemas on October 30.
In Sense and Sensibility, following their father’s death, sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood navigate societal expectations, heartbreak, and romance as the logical Elinor falls for the stoic Edward Ferrars and passionate Marianne encounters dashing bachelor John Willoughby, relying on their unshakable bond through every twist and turn.
Adapting Austen’s novel for the screen, screenwriter Diana Reid was struck by how contemporary the characters and narrative felt, noting that while Austen lacked modern dating lingo, behaviors like ‘love bombing’ and ‘ghosting’ were already front and centre.
“Just because the labels have changed, doesn’t mean that people have,” Reid said. “Some of the heartbreak in the novel felt like the kind of thing that you would see someone complain about on TikTok. A lot of her comedy comes from the fact that other people can be really annoying, but it just makes the romances all the more romantic. She essentially says that it is remarkable to find someone who you really like in this world, someone who sees the world the way you do.”
Directed by Georgia Oakley from a screenplay by Reid, the film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw, with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, India Flint, and Jo Wallett producing.
