Butterfield has warned clients about recent vishing [voice phishing] attempts in which scammers impersonate the bank and direct victims to fraudulent links posing as live support chat.
An email sent out by the bank said said, “Several of our clients have reported experiencing vishing attempts [voice phishing] in recent days. In these specific attempts, scammers call pretending to be from Butterfield and ultimately direct you to a fraudulent link for live ‘support’ chat. Please remember:
“We will never contact you and ask you to click on a link, transfer money to a “safe account” or install a piece of software on your device.
“We will also never ask you to disclose sensitive personal information like your credentials, PIN, or online OTP security codes.
“In the event that you or one of your colleagues has been / is contacted by one of these fraudsters, please notify us immediately.
“If something feels off, trust your gut. It’s always okay to take your time. Hang up. Delete it. Double-check. Report it immediately.
“Scams don’t target just one individual or organisation; they target all of us. Please feel free to share this alert with your colleagues, friends and family. What you spot, share and report today could help someone else avoid it tomorrow.
“Contact your relationship manager or call our contact centre at +1 [441] 295 -1111 if you need support. You can [and should] also report any fraud or fraud attempt to us and to the Bermuda Police Service Financial Crimes team at +1 [441] 247-1757.”
