Chinmay Sutar smashes historic 400* to shatter 78-year Ranji Trophy record
Chinmay Sutar has hit 400 in the Ranji Trophy, and the Mizoram batter now stands among the ten players in history to have scored a quadruple century in first-class cricket.
The 29-year-old remained unbeaten on 400 off 517 balls against Nagaland in a Plate Group match on Monday (October 19), a knock that places him alongside Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Hanif Mohammad in cricket’s most exclusive batting club.
Sutar’s effort was built on sustained aggression as much as endurance, as he hit 46 fours and seven sixes during his marathon stay at the crease. He was on 231 when Lalrempuia, the last man in the order, walked out to join him, and he carried on to a score of 400 not out. Mizoram eventually called a halt to their innings at 581 for 9, leaving Sutar unbeaten after 517 deliveries.
Who is Chinmay Sutar? The Mumbai-born batter who found his feet at Mizoram
Sutar is a right-handed top-order batter from Mumbai who came through India’s age-group and emerging-player pathways, though he never quite settled at state level.
His debut for Mumbai came in January this year against Maharashtra in Jaipur, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where Yashasvi Jaiswal handed him his cap. He batted at number five that day but was run out for 2, with Ruturaj Gaikwad involved in the dismissal.
He is understood to have moved to Mizoram in search of more opportunities, and the switch has paid off handsomely. On his debut for the state against Manipur on October 11, Sutar made 35 in the first innings and 99 in the second, and he was run out in that second innings before reaching a hundred. Only eight days later, he had gone far beyond that near-miss.
Indian batters to score 400 in first-class cricket
Sutar is the second Indian to reach 400 in the format, 78 years after BB Nimbalkar scored 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in Pune in 1948. Nimbalkar’s innings stayed the highest by an Indian in the format until now, and it remains so even after Sutar’s effort.

Sutar’s innings takes the number of 400-plus scores in first-class history to twelve, spread across ten batters, as Lara and WH Ponsford have each done it twice.
Lara holds the all-time record with his unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994, and he returned to the mark a decade later with 400 not out for West Indies against England in St John’s. Hanif Mohammad of Pakistan fell just one run short of 500 when he made 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1959.
