The Parque da Imaginação Musical (Musical Imagination Park) opened on 8 October and is free to visit, offering an outdoor experience designed for both children and adults.
As reported by NiT, the project blends music, nature and architecture, giving visitors the chance to experiment with instruments rather than simply listen to performances, including drums, bells and xylophones among the installations, allowing people to create their own sounds as they move through the park.
Green Capital
Local residents proposed the idea as part of Guimarães’ programme as European Green Capital 2026.
Musician and composer Tiago Simães designed the space with the aim of taking music beyond traditional settings such as classrooms and concert halls.
Speaking at the inauguration, Simães highlighted the importance of giving people opportunities to reconnect with the physical world.
As screens take up more of everyday life, he said places that encourage curiosity and play are especially valuable.
Community roots
Ricardo Araújo, Mayor of Guimarães, also emphasised the community roots of the project, describing it as an initiative created by residents for residents.
This park reflects the city’s ambitions to bring cultural activities and environmental awareness together during its year as European Green Capital.
