The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a man from Punjab for allegedly posing as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and cheating people by promising them jobs at airports and cheap goods, including iPhones. Police seized a fake CISF identity card from the accused and initiated legal action.
The accused has been identified as Azma A Sikandar Akhtar Kamboj, a resident of Malerkotla in Punjab. According to Ahmedabad Crime Branch Inspector I N Dhasura, the accused was found wearing a force T-shirt and claiming to be a CISF DSP near the entrance of Palika Bazaar in Ahmedabad.
Police received information about the man allegedly using the false identity to impress people.
PROMISED CHEAP GOODS, AIRPORT JOBS
During questioning, Kamboj told the police that after completing his studies in Malerkotla, he had worked as a daily-wage labourer, a mechanic and in other jobs.
Police said he allegedly cheated people by promising to arrange goods at lower prices, including walnuts from Kashmir, kerosene, discounted items from army canteens and iPhones. According to Inspector Dhasura, the accused took money from people but did not deliver the promised goods, admitting that he had spent the money on his personal indulgences.
Kamboj allegedly used his claimed position as a CISF DSP to gain people's trust. He also told people that he worked at an airport and allegedly used promises of airport jobs and cheaper phones from Dubai to defraud several people in Ahmedabad.
POLICE PROBE MONEY TRAIL AND BANK ACCOUNTS
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch said the accused allegedly collected money through online transactions and cash. He also used bank accounts belonging to travel agencies, petrol pumps and other people to receive payments.
Police are now investigating these accounts and the people who operated or allowed their accounts to be used. The probe will also examine how much money the accused allegedly collected, the accounts into which it was transferred and the reasons given for the payments.
ACCUSED WANTED IN J&K CASE
According to police records, Kamboj is wanted in connection with a cheating and theft case registered in Mazgaon in Jammu and Kashmir. The Ahmedabad Crime Branch is also checking whether any other cases have been registered against him in other states.
Further investigation is under way into the alleged fraud, the use of the fake CISF identity card and the financial transactions linked to the accused.
