The US government now has a formal body for overseeing artificial intelligence at the frontier. It has a charter, three committees, and a deadline.
The Super Intelligence Task Force (SIF) held its inaugural meeting on or around October 15, 2026. It used the session to adopt its charter and set out the protocols it will use to carry out the White House Accord on Super Intelligence.
What the task force actually did
The task force created three committees, each covering a different part of the AI risk picture.
The first handles reporting and response. The second focuses on critical infrastructure. The third covers law enforcement and consumer protection.
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton chairs the group. Its membership blends high-ranking government officials with leaders from major technology companies.
The task force also commissioned a risk study. David Sacks will oversee that work, which is meant to assess how AI could affect the workforce and the broader economy.
The findings will go to the Department of Labor.
Enforcement sits elsewhere. The Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department will manage enforcement of AI-related activities.
Where this came from
The task force exists to put the White House Accord on Super Intelligence into practice. That accord was signed earlier in October 2026.
The accord includes commitments from the CEOs of major companies, among them Google and Meta. Those pledges gave the government a framework. The task force is the machinery meant to turn that framework into operating procedure.
The group’s lifespan is short by design. It is set to operate for 120 days.
Putting the Director of National Intelligence in the chair frames advanced AI as a national security matter first. The task force’s mission also addresses potential risks related to cybersecurity, biosecurity, and civil liberties.
What this means
For investors in technology and AI, the compliance landscape just gained a new set of landmarks. Companies that signed the accord now face a body tasked with defining what their commitments mean in practice.
Firms whose products touch critical infrastructure, such as power, communications, or other essential systems, may find themselves under the closest watch. Consumer-facing AI products fall within reach of the law enforcement and consumer protection committee.
The FTC and the Justice Department already have tools and track records. Handing AI enforcement to them means companies are not waiting for a brand-new regulator to staff up.
The Sacks-led risk study may prove to be the most politically charged piece. Findings delivered to the Department of Labor could shape how the government thinks about retraining, displacement, and economic policy.
The 120-day clock is the main thing to track. The key questions are what the committees publish before the window closes, and whether any of the task force’s protocols outlive the task force itself.
Another open question is how binding the outputs turn out to be. The accord rests on commitments from company leaders, described by participants as “morally binding,” which obligates firms to institute internal security measures, external audits, board oversight, and regular meetings focused on standard-setting. The task force is building protocols to implement it. Enforcement runs through the FTC and the Justice Department.
