By Zoila Palma: Today, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele announced that his government had launched a military operation to rescue four Salvadoran members of an international, United Nations-backed security force who are reportedly being held hostage by armed gangs in Haiti.
Bukele said the operation aims to bring the missing personnel back safely but did not provide further details or identify the group allegedly holding them, Reuters report.
The four Salvadorans went missing on Sunday after jumping from a burning armored vehicle that was ambushed by armed gangs on the outskirts of Haiti’s capital while they were returning from a market to their base, according to security officials.
El Salvador’s military and the Gang Suppression Force had earlier announced efforts to locate the missing personnel, but said intense fighting in the area had restricted access.
Bukele said the missing men are aviation technicians rather than combatants, explaining that their primary responsibilities involve medical evacuations and saving lives.
Haiti continues to face widespread gang violence, with armed groups strengthening their control over the capital and expanding into surrounding regions.
