The Ethereum layer-2 network's new feature aims to stop outside observers from linking a user's DeFi activity to a single wallet.
Starknet, a layer-2 scaling network built on Ethereum, has launched a feature called Shadow Accounts. The tool is designed to prevent wallets used for decentralized finance activity from being linked together by outside observers.
According to reporting from CryptoBriefing, Crypto Economy, and Cointelegraph, the feature addresses a core privacy gap in DeFi. Most blockchain transactions are recorded on public ledgers. That transparency lets anyone trace a wallet's trading, lending, or borrowing history, and in many cases connect separate wallets back to the same user.
Shadow Accounts are meant to break that chain of inference. By keeping DeFi wallets unlinkable, Starknet aims to let users interact with multiple protocols without exposing a single, traceable footprint. Crypto Economy described the move as enabling more private DeFi transactions, a goal that has drawn growing interest as on-chain analytics tools have become more sophisticated.
Starknet uses zero-knowledge proof technology to scale Ethereum, allowing transactions to be verified without revealing every underlying detail to the base chain. That cryptographic foundation has made the network a natural testing ground for privacy-oriented features, since zero-knowledge systems are built around proving validity without disclosing full data.
Privacy has remained a persistent concern in DeFi despite the sector's rapid growth. Wallet addresses, once linked to real-world identity through an exchange, a social account, or an on-chain interaction, can expose a user's entire financial history. That risk has pushed both developers and users to seek tools that limit unnecessary data exposure while still operating within transparent, auditable blockchain systems.
The launch comes as the broader crypto industry continues to debate how to balance privacy with regulatory compliance. Lawmakers and regulators in several jurisdictions have scrutinized privacy-enhancing crypto tools, citing concerns about illicit finance. Developers of such tools generally argue that financial privacy is a legitimate need for ordinary users, not just bad actors, and that transparent settlement layers can coexist with private transaction details.
Market Impact
A successful privacy layer could make Starknet more attractive to users who are cautious about exposing their full trading history on public chains. If Shadow Accounts gain adoption, it may encourage other layer-2 networks to pursue similar unlinkability features, intensifying competition around privacy-preserving DeFi infrastructure.
At the same time, any privacy tool built into a DeFi ecosystem is likely to draw attention from regulators focused on anti-money-laundering rules. How Starknet balances unlinkable wallet activity with compliance expectations could influence whether institutional users and compliant protocols choose to integrate the feature.
Shadow Accounts mark Starknet's latest step toward making DeFi usable without sacrificing user privacy, though its long-term impact will depend on adoption and regulatory reception.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Shadow Accounts on Starknet?
Shadow Accounts are a Starknet feature designed to keep wallets used for DeFi activity unlinkable to one another, preventing outside observers from tracing a user's full on-chain history.
Why does wallet linkability matter in DeFi?
Blockchain transactions are typically public, so linked wallets can expose a user's entire trading, lending, and borrowing history to anyone analyzing the chain.
Does this feature make transactions anonymous?
The reporting describes Shadow Accounts as enabling more private DeFi transactions by preventing wallet linkage, rather than claiming full anonymity.
Is Starknet the first network to offer wallet privacy tools?
Privacy features exist elsewhere in crypto, but Starknet's Shadow Accounts specifically target unlinkability for DeFi wallets built on its zero-knowledge-based layer-2 infrastructure.
