Agartala, Oct 21: Two indigenous organisations in Tripura have lodged police complaints against a content creator over an allegedly racist video targeting a youth from the state and containing derogatory remarks about Tripura.
The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) and the TIPRA Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF) submitted separate complaints at the NCC Police Station in Agartala, seeking legal action against Amir Shokeen over a video circulated on social media.
According to the TISF complaint, the video, allegedly uploaded on September 19, shows the content creator making racial remarks and offensive gestures towards an indigenous youth from Tripura during an interaction in Delhi.
The organisation alleged that the youth was repeatedly referred to as “Chinese” and that the name of Tripura was deliberately distorted into an obscene expression.
The student body urged police to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, wherever applicable. It also called for coordination with the Delhi Police and cybercrime authorities to preserve digital evidence and initiate appropriate legal proceedings following an investigation.
YTF General Secretary James Debbarma, accompanied by MDCs Prasmit Debbarma and Sujoy Uchoi, along with other members, condemned the alleged remarks and demanded immediate action against the accused.
Former TIPRA Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma also criticised the video and called for strict legal action.
“Amir Shokeen has made fun of our people and even the historic name of Tripura by calling it C#%tpura. If this is not an insult to us, then what is?” Pradyot said, urging authorities to act promptly.
The complaints come amid continuing concerns over alleged racial discrimination against people from Northeast India in other parts of the country.
The indigenous organisations maintained that racial stereotyping and derogatory remarks about a community or region cannot be justified as humour or online content creation.
