By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Today, Monday, October 12, is Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day, a public and bank holiday in Belize.
Government offices and banks are closed, and many businesses will be operating on adjusted hours. Belizeans are encouraged to check with businesses and service providers before heading out.
The holiday was formerly known as Pan American Day. It was renamed to recognize the history, struggle and resilience of Indigenous peoples in Belize and across the Americas.
The day honours the resistance of Indigenous communities in the face of colonization, and celebrates the cultures, languages and traditions that have endured for centuries.
For many Belizeans, it is also a long weekend and a chance to spend time with family.
