The club has constructed a sheltered walkway linking the maternity ward to the theatre to protect patients during transfers for emergency procedures, including Caesarean sections, and distributed essential supplies to mothers.
The Lions Club of Ntungamo has strengthened maternal healthcare at Kitwe Health Centre IV with a sheltered walkway connecting the maternity ward to the theatre, alongside the distribution of essential supplies to pregnant women and mothers who have given birth.
The walkway is intended to protect expectant mothers and other patients from rain and direct sunshine as they are transferred between the maternity ward and the theatre for emergency procedures, including Caesarean sections.
Lions Club of Ntungamo President Ezra Kwesigamukama said the project addressed a pressing need at the health facility while complementing the club’s broader humanitarian work.
“We observed that there was a serious need for patients to be protected from harsh conditions like rain and sunshine, especially during Caesarean sections,” Kwesigamukama said.
He added that the club had also planted fruit trees to promote environmental conservation and contribute to efforts to address hunger in the community.
Speaking during the commissioning of the walkway, Lions District 411B Governor John Kikanu Byarugaba commended the Ntungamo club for its community outreach and urged members to sustain their interventions.
“More hands mean more services provided,” Byarugaba said, calling on members of the public to join Lions Clubs International and support its humanitarian work.
The Ntungamo club’s activities also include eye health and diabetes awareness, environmental conservation and other community support initiatives.
The club is also looking to establish a comprehensive care centre in partnership with South Ankole Diocese in Kyamate, as it seeks to expand its contribution to healthcare and community welfare.
