Dog survives 50 hours alone after Alaska avalanche

A dog named LouLou has been found alive after spending more than 50 hours alone in Alaska’s snowy wilderness, following an avalanche that swept away the two mountaineers she was accompanying.

While both men survived the incident but suffered serious injuries, LouLou disappeared into the mountainous terrain, prompting a desperate search that involved more than 20 people, helicopter pilots and a small tracking device that offered a crucial clue. The four-year-old poodle-husky mix was hiking with two experienced mountaineers near Pepper Peak in Alaska’s Chugach State Park on October 10 when an avalanche swept the men approximately 500 feet down a mountain ridge, according to People. The men were rescued and taken to hospital, but LouLou could not be found. Her owner, Lauren Padawer, was thousands of miles away when she learnt about the incident and began coordinating efforts to locate her dog.

Owner launches search from thousands of miles away

Padawer was overseas celebrating her father’s 80th birthday when news of the avalanche reached her. After learning that both men had survived, she turned her attention to finding LouLou.Unable to reach the mountainous area herself, she contacted local pet rescue groups, hiking organisations, mountaineering groups and people who might be able to help. According to People, she reached out to more than 36 individuals as the search gathered momentum.

“I just wanted to exhaust every resource I had and only give up [knowing] I did everything I could do,” Padawer told People, adding that she was not sleeping much during the ordeal.More than 20 people eventually joined the search, including volunteers on the ground, helicopter pilots, drone operators and a scent-detection dog.The search was complicated by the difficult terrain and changing weather conditions. In the Chugach Mountains, locating a missing animal in deep snow and rugged surroundings was far from straightforward.

How an Apple AirTag helped narrow the search

One important clue was that LouLou was wearing an Apple AirTag. However, the device’s initial location estimate was nearly half a mile off, making it difficult for rescuers to pinpoint her exact position.Padawer explained the challenge in a Facebook post, writing: “On an ordinary map, that might not seem enormous. In the rugged Chugach Mountains, half a mile can mean an entirely different ridge, drainage, or mountainside especially with rapidly shifting and intermittently stormy weather.”Volunteer pilots Amanda Barker and Dave Beckett continued helping with the aerial search. They managed to pick up another signal from LouLou’s AirTag, but worsening weather eventually forced the search to stop for the day.Even from overseas, Padawer continued working to narrow down the possible location. She compared satellite imagery with another mapping application to better understand the terrain and identify the area where the pilots had received the signal. The information helped the team focus its efforts. After approximately 50 hours alone in the wilderness, LouLou was finally spotted on a snowy mountainside on October 12. The helicopter landed, and rescuers approached her on foot before flying her to safety.

‘I couldn’t believe what I was seeing’

For Padawer, the moment she learnt that LouLou had been found was difficult to comprehend.“I was shocked!” she told People. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

It was too good to be true. I cried.”LouLou was subsequently examined and found to have suffered relatively minor injuries, including a broken toe and a damaged canine tooth. Otherwise, she was doing well and had returned home to rest.“She’s amazing, she appears to have broken a toe and a canine tooth. She’s enjoying the couch and naps. Otherwise back to normal.”The owner also believed LouLou’s familiarity with outdoor environments may have helped her endure the ordeal.

The dog regularly accompanied her owner on backcountry skiing trips and was accustomed to spending time on mountain trails.“She’s a seasoned backcountry skier companion dog and is very good at following the trail back,” Padawer told People while describing LouLou’s temperament and love for the outdoors. She also pointed to the dog’s thick coat as a possible advantage in the cold conditions. “I think she’s just built for cold… she’s got a soft downy undercoat and thick curly guard hairs,” she said.

A rescue made possible by volunteers

While LouLou’s survival after more than two days alone in the mountains was remarkable, Padawer credited the people who kept searching despite the difficult conditions. She particularly praised pilots Barker and Beckett for helping locate and retrieve the dog.“Their generosity, skill, and determination turned a desperate search into an extraordinary homecoming,” Padawer wrote on Facebook. For the owner, the reunion brought an end to a frightening wait that had unfolded across thousands of miles. For the rescue team, it was the result of sustained coordination, aerial searches and the use of whatever clues were available. And LouLou, after an ordeal that left her with a broken toe and a damaged tooth, was back home doing what her owner said she was enjoying most: resting on the couch and taking naps.
