Red Bull has given a very strong endorsement of Laurent Mekies' leadership by publicly announcing the extension of his contract as its Formula 1 team principal through 2031.
Though it is increasingly common for F1 team principals both to be on specific-term contracts rather than rolling employee deals, and for extensions of those deals to be announced in public, Red Bull's strong display of faith in Mekies still stands out as a message the company hierarchy clearly wanted the world to hear.
He was swiftly moved across from junior team Racing Bulls when Christian Horner was ousted from Red Bull last summer.
The Red Bull press release announcing Mekies’ new deal specifically highlighted that "under Laurent’s leadership, the team delivered a remarkable turnaround during the second half of the 2025 season, ultimately missing out on the drivers’ championship by just two points".
The announcement of Mekies’ new deal comes after Max Verstappen’s decision to commit to Red Bull for the long term, the team extending Isack Hadjar’s deal, and Verstappen taking back to back wins in Malaysia and Singapore.
It also coincides with Mekies’ predecessor Horner being back in the public eye around the launch of his new book and an associated run of interviews in which his time at - and exit from - Red Bull are a major topic.
A joint comment from Red Bull shareholders Chalerm Yoovidhya and Mark Mateschitz read: "Laurent has played a crucial role in guiding the team through an important period of transition while maintaining the competitive spirit and the Red Bull principles that define us.
"This extension reflects our confidence in his leadership and our shared belief in the long-term vision of the team."
