The Poonkurichi Nanparkal Educational and Charitable Trust and members of the public from Modakkurichi constituency have petitioned Collector S. Kandasamy to initiate steps to identify Government land for establishing a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in the district.
The petition, submitted by the trust’s founder-president, K. Praksam, along with former MLA C. Saraswathi, sought an assessment of suitable land in the constituency and the forwarding of a proposal to the State and Central governments and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS).
The trust said a JNV would expand access to quality residential education for talented children, particularly those from rural areas.
Citing judicial proceedings on establishing JNVs in Tamil Nadu, the petition referred to a Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court judgment of September 11, 2017, and subsequent proceedings in the Supreme Court. It noted that the Supreme Court, in an order dated September 17, 2026, directed the State government to comply with its earlier order on identifying the required land in each district and granted three months for compliance. The court also directed further discussions between the State and Union governments, making its directions subject to the outcome of the pending appeal.
The petition urged the district administration to assess potential sites for land extent, ownership, classification, accessibility and availability of essential infrastructure, including water, electricity and sanitation. It also sought coordination with the Revenue and School Education departments and the NVS to verify the applicable site-selection requirements. The trust requested the Collector to appoint a nodal officer to coordinate the exercise and forward the details of suitable sites to the competent authorities for consideration.
