Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 season after doctors diagnosed him with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and bilateral pulmonary emboli.
The 28-year-old's condition has raised questions about how a blood clot can travel from the leg to the lungs, why it can become dangerous and what recovery involves. The Eagles have said he is clinically stable and expect him to recover fully.
What happened to Jalen Hurts?
According to the Philadelphia Eagles' official statement, Hurts initially had a superficial blood clot in his left calf. The problem came to light after he reported discomfort following a cleat injury during the October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams.An ultrasound in London detected the clot before Philadelphia played Jacksonville on October 11. Doctors cleared him to play, according to the team's earlier statement. A follow-up ultrasound after his return to Philadelphia revealed that the clot had moved. Further medical evaluations subsequently identified DVT and blood clots in both lungs.
What is deep vein thrombosis?
Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg.
It can develop when blood flow slows or a vein becomes damaged.Unlike a bruise or ordinary muscle soreness, DVT can cause complications beyond the injured area. Symptoms may include leg swelling, tenderness, pain, warmth and skin discolouration. However, some people have no noticeable symptoms. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains how these clots develop, who may be at risk and why early medical attention matters.
What is bilateral ?
A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs. It often happens when part of a clot from a deep vein breaks away and travels through the bloodstream. The word bilateral means both lungs are affected. However, it does not automatically indicate how severe a person's condition is. The location of the clots, their effect on blood flow and the patient's overall stability all matter.According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, symptoms can include sudden breathlessness, chest pain, rapid breathing, a faster heartbeat and fainting.
A pulmonary embolism can become life-threatening and requires urgent medical care.
Why is Hurts taking blood thinners?
The Eagles said Hurts will receive anticoagulant treatment, commonly called blood thinners. These medicines do not literally thin the blood. Instead, they reduce its ability to form clots and help prevent existing clots from growing while the body gradually breaks them down.Treatment requires medical supervision because anticoagulants can increase bleeding risk.
The team has also ruled out contact activities, including football, while Hurts undergoes treatment.
What does his diagnosis mean for recovery?
The Eagles have described Hurts' prognosis as very good and expect a full recovery. However, no specific return date has been confirmed. His case also highlights an important health lesson: being physically fit does not eliminate the risk of blood clots. Injury, reduced blood flow and other medical factors can contribute to clot formation.
Long-distance travel may add risk for some people, particularly when other risk factors are present.Anyone experiencing unexplained leg swelling or pain should seek medical advice. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain or fainting requires emergency medical attention. Recognising these warning signs early can make a critical difference.Disclaimer: This article is for general awareness and does not replace professional medical advice.
