Football’s richest clubs can afford the world’s best players, but expensive squads still lose matches. So what gives a smaller team a fighting chance against opponents with far deeper pockets?
Wimbledon weren’t supposed to beat Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup final. Liverpool had the money, the stars and a league title already in the bag. Wimbledon had other ideas. Lawrie Sanchez’s header settled the match, giving English football one of its greatest upsets. Nearly 40 years later, with the financial gap between clubs wider than ever, could the same thing happen today? Football has become a much bigger business, but even the wealthiest owners cannot send their bank balances onto the pitch. Somebody still has to score the goals.
Money Has Changed the Football Experience
Football has become a huge entertainment business, and the money surrounding it now extends well beyond ticket sales. Premier League clubs attract international audiences, while supporters can follow their teams from practically anywhere. The commercial opportunities surrounding those audiences have grown accordingly.
That wider entertainment market includes an online casino, where adult users can access a library of over 3,500 slot games alongside live-dealer roulette and blackjack. It’s a different form of entertainment from watching football, but it illustrates the range of digital options competing for people’s leisure time.
Football clubs have benefited enormously from the growth of broadcasting and commercial partnerships. Those revenues help pay for expensive players and increasingly sophisticated facilities. The trouble is that having the financial resources to compete and actually winning football matches remain two very different propositions.
The Financial Stakes Have Never Been Higher
Manchester City provide a particularly interesting example of the financial pressures surrounding modern football. Their success under Pep Guardiola has established them among Europe’s leading clubs, but their finances have also attracted considerable scrutiny.
The Premier League’s investigation into Man City’s financial reporting led to serious allegations concerning the club’s compliance with competition rules. The case subsequently produced contested findings, with City challenging the outcome through an appeal.
The distinction here is important. Financial compliance is a regulatory question, whereas winning matches depends on what happens on the pitch. City’s achievements under Guardiola demonstrate what substantial investment can accomplish when combined with excellent coaching.
Yet even clubs with enormous resources face difficult decisions. Expensive signings can struggle to settle, and a manager must find a way to accommodate different playing styles. Transfer fees tell you what clubs were prepared to pay for footballers. They don’t tell you whether those footballers will work together.
Wimbledon Proved the Value of a Team
Wimbledon’s 1988 victory remains a wonderful example of what happens when players understand their responsibilities. Liverpool were the reigning champions and had already secured the First Division title that season. Wimbledon were playing their first FA Cup final.
The result came down to considerably more than determination. Wimbledon had a clear approach to the game, knew their opponents’ strengths and were prepared to compete physically. Sanchez’s header gave them the lead, and Dave Beasant’s penalty save from John Aldridge helped preserve it.
Sanchez still believes the Crazy Gang’s reputation has distracted people from their actual footballing achievements. His reflections on Wimbledon and Northern Ireland emphasise the importance of organisation and players understanding their jobs.
That principle helped him take Northern Ireland from 124th to 27th in the FIFA rankings during his managerial tenure. The players didn’t suddenly become world superstars. They became a side capable of troubling stronger opponents because they knew what was expected of them.
Expensive Players Still Need a Plan
Paris Saint-Germain offer another useful example. The French club assembled a remarkable collection of attacking talent when Lionel Messi joined Neymar and Kylian Mbappé in 2021. On paper, you’d struggle to find a more intimidating forward line.
Yet PSG failed to win the Champions League during Messi’s two seasons in Paris. The individual ability was extraordinary, but balancing such prominent attacking players presented tactical problems. Somebody still had to defend when possession was lost.
PSG eventually won their first Champions League title in 2025, beating Inter Milan 5–0 in the final under Luis Enrique. Their attacking approach relied on coordinated pressing and contributions throughout the team.
There’s a lesson there for wealthy clubs. Signing talented footballers provides a manager with better options, but those players must understand the system they’re being asked to play. A collection of outstanding individuals still needs to function as a football team.
Money Gives You an Advantage, Not a Result
Nobody seriously expects a modest club to compete financially with Manchester City across a 38-match Premier League season. Wealthier teams can afford stronger replacements when injuries arrive, and their squad depth gives them an advantage when fixtures accumulate.
A cup tie is different. The underdog needs to get things right for one afternoon, and the favourite can find itself facing an opponent that has prepared exceptionally well.
Wimbledon managed exactly that against Liverpool in 1988. Their victory didn’t change the financial balance of English football, but it proved that resources alone cannot settle a match.
