GIMPO — The city of Gimpo in Gyeonggi Province has reorganized its Information and Communications Division into an AI Policy Division, formally launching a central coordinating body to oversee artificial intelligence-driven reform of city administration. The new unit handles everything from AI policy planning to data platform construction, information security and telecommunications infrastructure within a single department — a sweeping administrative experiment that goes well beyond conventional IT support.
The city said on the 13th that it had completed the reorganization to embed AI technology across city government operations and had begun implementing policy in earnest.
At the center of the overhaul is the successful launch this year of the Gimpo Intelligent Integrated AI and Data Platform, a key campaign pledge of Mayor Lee Ki-hyung, along with a fundamental shift toward data-centered work practices.
The new AI Policy Division comprises five dedicated teams: AI policy, information planning, information protection, administrative information and information and communications. The teams work in close coordination within one department, covering everything from turning AI into policy to information security and on-site infrastructure, in order to maximize the speed and efficiency of projects.
The city is expanding AI and data training for all employees so that AI does not remain the preserve of a few departments. Officials concluded that a sophisticated data platform must be paired with staff capable of using it in practice if public services are to improve in ways residents can feel.
"This reorganization marks a turning point at which AI and data become basic tools of administration," a Gimpo city official said. "We will continue to deliver fast, smart administrative services that residents can experience in their daily lives."
