Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has never been shy about sharing her opinions. Cunningham is a fan of Angel Reese, but following the Atlanta Dream forward’s physical play during the WNBA postseason, she has deemed it “dangerous”.
She spoke on her No Hesitation podcast with Drew Hanlen, when the Dream made it to the WNBA Finals, about the mentality that Reese and the team had.
“Angel- I love it when she has her teammates back. That just shows that she cares and she loves her teammates,” Cunningham said. But, she continued: “If you’re going to chase someone down the court and get in someone’s ear… You can’t tackle someone in the air and go for someone’s knees and ankles.”
Uproar Around WNBA Referees and Technical Foul Calls
Cunningham was critical of the refereeing in the Dream’s postseason games as well, highlighting an incident during Dream playoff action with New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu where Reese was able to get away with not calling a tech after trailing a player and yelling at the opponent.
“I do think that the fact that she didn’t get a tech on that, I think that’s definitely crazy,” Cunningham said.
Reese was called for a technical foul much later in the game after a brief on-court spat with Jonquel Jones. As per playoff guidelines, a technical fouls cost Reese one game, and both viewers and players are watching Reese’s behavior with three games to go in the Dream WNBA Finals.
