Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old college football player at Southern Nazarene University (SNU), has died after suffering a serious injury during a game in Arkansas.
The sophomore safety passed away on Thursday, October 15, five days after the incident that left him hospitalized and prompted an outpouring of support from his family, teammates and wider university community.

Ulrich’s official cause of death has not been disclosed. Southern Nazarene confirmed that he suffered what it described as a “traumatic injury” during its game against Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday, October 10.
Reports identified the injury as a head injury, but the university has not publicly provided further medical details or explained the precise circumstances that led to his death.
The incident occurred during a Division II matchup in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Play was stopped for nearly an hour as medical personnel treated Ulrich on the field. He was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he remained for five days before his death was announced.
The circumstances have brought renewed attention to the dangers of serious injuries in American football. However, without an official medical explanation, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the specific injury or the events that caused Ulrich’s death.
SNU Athletics shared the news on social media, writing: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich,” before expressing its condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
“This loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew him. We ask that you join us in lifting them up in prayer.”
Tyler Ulrich remembered by his family and football community
The reaction to Ulrich’s death has reflected the impact he made beyond the football field. Southern Nazarene head coach Dustin Hada paid tribute to the player’s character in a social media post, describing the qualities he believed defined him.
“Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous. That’s who Tyler was!!”
Ulrich’s father, Mark, had also been sharing updates as the family waited for news about his son’s condition. In a Facebook post earlier on Thursday, he thanked those who had offered prayers and support while explaining how desperately the family hoped for a recovery.
“Our family is truly blessed to receive all the love and prayers for our young Tyler and we are ever grateful,” he wrote. “But as much support and love that was given, it is with a heavy heart I am writing to say the Lord called Tyler this morning at 11:13 a.m.”
The message marked the end of a painful period of uncertainty for those closest to Ulrich. Although the family had received widespread encouragement, he ultimately did not recover from the injury.
Originally from Azle, Texas, Ulrich was in his third season with Southern Nazarene, a university based in Bethany, Oklahoma. He had started 16 of his 20 appearances for the programme, including six games during the current season, and recorded 36 tackles.
His role as a safety involved helping defend against opposing passing and running plays, making him an important part of the team's defensive unit.
The university also confirmed that its scheduled game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday, October 17, would not take place.
Southwestern Oklahoma State announced the cancellation, offering its support to the SNU programme and university community as they mourned Ulrich.
For now, the precise medical cause of Ulrich’s death remains unconfirmed publicly. What is clear is that a young athlete’s life ended following an on-field emergency, leaving his family, friends and teammates to grieve a loss that came only days after the game.
