Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) noted that its Garuda Bhayangkara contingent had the distinction of helping ensure the security of presidential and vice-presidential candidates during its deployment in the Central African Republic.
Head of the Polri International Mission Bureau Brig. Gen. Tommy Wibisono explained that the contingent was deployed as part of the seventh Formed Police Unit (FPU-7) under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
"Although there were contingents from several other countries, the Indonesian team was entrusted with securing presidential and vice-presidential candidates during the elections," he said at police headquarters in Jakarta on Monday.
He made the statement during a ceremony for the presentation of the Satyalancana Bhakti Buana medal to 140 contingent personnel. Polri Deputy Chief Commissioner General Wahyu Hadiningrat presented the medal on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto.
Wibisono noted that the contingent's peacekeeping operation extended beyond security and political stabilization efforts, highlighting its humanitarian activities.
"We had a platoon of female officers assigned to engage with mothers and children there. In other words, we also carried out humanitarian missions," he said.
He further noted that the FPU-7 task force had returned to Indonesia after completing a one-year deployment in the Central African Republic, while an FPU-8 contingent had been dispatched to continue the peacekeeping mission.
"We have also coordinated with the United Nations in the hope that an Indonesian contingent will be involved in new peacekeeping missions in other regions," Wibisono said.
He added that the decoration awarded by President Prabowo would serve as motivation for police personnel to continue carrying out their duties to the fullest.
Wibisono also highlighted Polri Chief General Suyudi Ario Seto's leadership motto, "Police with the People."
"We stand with the people at home, and with the global community abroad," he said.
