The Persian Gulf coast in Iran became the scene of unusual activity this week as local fishermen abandoned their traditional fishing nets and headed into the waters of the Strait of Hormuz in small motorboats and rescue dinghies with one clear goal: to collect valuable cargo floating on the water's surface.
According to a report by The Telegraph, a massive shipment containing hundreds of brand-new iPhones, luxury French perfumes, and other consumer goods spilled into the sea following the sinking of the container ship "GFS Pride" on October 14.
Videos circulating on social media show dozens of local fishermen navigating between semi-submerged containers while pulling boxes directly from the waves, with one small boat even seen attempting to tow a fully loaded giant shipping container.
Authorities in Singapore, where the vessel is flagged, confirmed that the ship sank following a fire that broke out on deck, but all 21 crew members were evacuated unharmed.
Conversely, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed that the vessel strayed into an "unauthorized and dangerous" lane and struck a naval mine, which sank it along with more than 2,500 containers on board. This is the third vessel to sink in the area since the outbreak of hostilities in late February.
Surge of hostile IRGC activity in the Strait of Hormuz
This incident occurs against the backdrop of a sharp surge in hostile IRGC activity surrounding the strategic strait.
Last Friday, Iranian armed forces spokesman Gen. Mohammad Akraminia clarified that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is contingent upon a full withdrawal of United States forces from the region, threatening that Iranian forces would forcibly expel American troops if they remained.
According to him, foreign presence in the area undermines maritime security, and he urged shipowners to utilize only corridors supervised by the Iranian military to ensure their safety.
Maritime and land warfare in the region continues unabated. The Iranian Navy reported closely monitoring a fire that broke out aboard an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman after it attempted to cross a "prohibited zone" while turning off its tracking systems.
On the other side of the Arabian Peninsula, the Houthi movement in Yemen tightened its siege on the city of Taiz, while the Saudi-led coalition announced it successfully intercepted and destroyed ballistic missiles and drones launched toward Riyadh and Red Sea ports.
