Kohima, Oct 13: Nagaland’s 21-year-old powerlifter Namteulung Newme has brought home three gold medals from the World Cup Powerlifting Championship 2026 in Kathmandu, Nepal, earning a warm welcome from family members and well-wishers at Dimapur/Chümoukedima Airport on Tuesday.
Competing in the Sub-Junior category, Newme clinched gold medals in all three disciplines — squat, bench press and deadlift — marking a major achievement for the young athlete on the international stage.
His return was marked by a reception attended by family members, well-wishers and representatives of the Zeliang Youth Organisation, who gathered to congratulate him on his performance.
Newme’s achievement has drawn attention to the emerging sporting talent in Nagaland and the potential of young athletes from the state to compete at international-level championships.
Powerlifting tests athletes across three core lifts: the squat, bench press and deadlift. Winning gold in all three disciplines is a notable accomplishment, reflecting performance across the different events.
Newme’s success is expected to encourage more young people in Nagaland to explore strength sports and pursue competitive opportunities at higher levels.
His three-gold-medal haul in Nepal has added a new milestone to Nagaland’s sporting achievements and brought pride to his family and community.
