Patrick Mahomes needed little time to find his rhythm after the bye week. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday and moved to 5-0. A familiar pair played a big part in that win, and the team’s official X account soon shared a clip with a bold caption. The story behind it shows a partnership defenses still cannot solve.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s Chargers performance shows Chiefs remain hard to stop
The Chiefs’ official X account shared a 70-second highlight. The caption read, “Can’t stop Kelce,” and it tagged both Patrick Mahomes and the tight end. The opening frame shows Mahomes rolling out on first and 10 with Kansas City up 9-3, while Kelce works through traffic nearby.
The numbers back up the message. Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards and one interception. He did not throw a touchdown, yet the offense stayed in control. The performance also gave him his 100th career win as a starter.
Travis Kelce caught four of his five targets for 53 yards. That modest line still moved him past DeAndre Hopkins for 19th on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list with 13,301. He now has 20 catches for 299 yards and two touchdowns through five games.
That production arrived with Rashee Rice sidelined by hamstring and knee issues. Xavier Worthy led the team with seven catches for 73 yards. Kenneth Walker III added 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Still, an early scare nearly changed Kelce’s day, and what followed says plenty.
Kelce battles through ankle scare in Chiefs win
Kelce left the opening drive with an ankle issue, and trainers wrapped it on the medical table. He returned and played the rest of the game, while his wife, Taylor Swift, cheered from the stands and fans reacted to her camera time during the Chargers game.
“Kelce tweaked his ankle there but continued to play. It might be a little sore tomorrow, but he did a nice job tonight,” HC Andy Reid said afterward.
The rematch also carried weight for Mahomes. He tore knee ligaments in last December’s loss to the Chargers, which ended Kansas City’s playoff hopes, and he watched the tape of that game only this week. Mahomes told reporters, “Last year to me put football in perspective.”
The defense helped too, with four sacks of Justin Herbert after a three-game drought. The Chiefs went 6-11 last season, so this start marks a sharp turnaround.
At 5-0, Kansas City remains the AFC’s lone unbeaten team and visits the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. Walker faces his former team, and Seattle must find a way to slow Mahomes and Kelce. Kansas City brings the momentum, and Seattle needs answers.
