KUALA LUMPUR: Two men were arrested after a police pursuit from Jalan Wangsa 5 in Bukit Antarabangsa ended in a crash at the Jalan Jelatek traffic light intersection in Setiawangsa today.
The suspects, who were in an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, were found with equipment believed to be for cable theft.
City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said preliminary investigations found that the pickup truck's driver, 32, and his 21-year-old passenger had attempted to flee a police inspection.
The chase ended when the driver allegedly lost control and rammed into a Proton Wira, a Proton Persona and a Toyota Harrier at the intersection.
No injuries were reported.
Mohd Zamzuri said Ampang Jaya police made the arrests.
Video footage of the chase and crash went viral on social media, with many likening it to a scene from the Grand Theft Auto video game series.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code, Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987, Sections 427 and 431A of the Penal Code, and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The offences cover obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, the use of fraudulent vehicle registration numbers or road tax, destruction of property, as well as reckless and dangerous driving.
Meanwhile, Ampang Jaya police chief, Assistant Commissioner Khairul Anuar Khalid, said an inspection of the vehicle uncovered several items, including a parang, a sickle and equipment suspected to have been used for cable theft, including a manhole cover opener.
"Police also seized substances suspected to be drugs from both suspects for further investigation," he told the press today.
Earlier, several videos of the incident went viral on Threads, showing the suspects' vehicle crashing into a road divider at the Jalan Jelatek-Setiawangsa intersection before becoming stuck in the opposite-direction lane.
Footage recorded by members of the public showed one of the suspects fleeing the scene before being apprehended by police with assistance from nearby road users.
