Booking a pickup game used to mean a group chat, a maybe-available field, and hoping enough people actually showed up.
What problem GoodRec set out to solve
Most sports apps start with a sport and work outward: a running app, a pickleball app, a soccer league app, then add cities one at a time. GoodRec started somewhere else, with a scheduling problem. Fields and courts sit empty on weeknights, players cancel a few hours before game time, and whoever organized the game spends more energy chasing headcounts than actually playing.
GoodRec treats every open game as a slot that needs filling, not a roster somebody has to manage by hand. Players sign up, the system finds them a spot, and the coordination that used to live in a group chat happens in the background instead.
GoodRec pairs players with open game slots at partner facilities based on location and availability, then handles the booking end to end. A cancellation doesn't kill the game anymore. It opens a slot the system can hand to someone else looking for a game in that neighborhood, at that time. That's the core shift from the old group-chat model: the empty spot becomes the system's problem to solve, not the organizer's.
How the matching runs at scale
None of that works without volume on both sides: enough open slots and enough players moving through them that a last-minute cancellation gets backfilled instead of just leaving a hole. GoodRec now runs the system across more than 500 partner facilities and generates more than 2,000 games a week, the density that makes same-day matching realistic rather than theoretical.
The facility side of the equation matters as much as the player side. A gym or turf field that would otherwise sit dark on a Tuesday night becomes bookable inventory instead. GoodRec's case to venue owners isn't about adding capacity. It's about filling the hours between scheduled leagues and weekend tournaments that would otherwise generate nothing. For a facility, an empty weeknight slot is a sunk cost either way; GoodRec's pitch is that it can turn at least some of those hours into revenue without the venue doing any of the selling or scheduling itself.
That two-sided density is also what lets GoodRec expand sport by sport within a city instead of city by city within a sport. Once a facility and a base of players exist in a market, adding basketball, soccer, or pickleball to the same matching engine is a smaller lift than opening an entirely new metro area from scratch.
Where the growth goes from here
The numbers back up the model so far. GoodRec organized more than 65,000 games in 2025 and now counts more than 1 million players across over 50 US cities. The company attributes most of that growth to facilities filling weeknight gaps that used to go unbooked, not to marketing spend, which, if it holds, is a cheaper and more durable way to grow than paying for acquisition city by city.
That growth is happening inside a market that's expected to expand fast regardless of what any single company does. MarketsandMarkets projects the global sports technology market will grow from an estimated $34.25 billion in 2025 to $68.70 billion by 2030. GoodRec's bet is narrower than that market-wide number: that a matching system built for any sport, in any city, holds up better under that growth than a single-sport app trying to expand one market at a time.
Whether that bet pays off comes down to the same mechanics that got GoodRec this far: enough facilities on the platform, enough players cycling through it, and few enough empty slots that pickup sports stop being a coordination problem in the first place. The company's next test is whether that density holds as it moves into smaller metros, where the player pool and the facility count are both thinner than in the cities where the model was built.
