Solana activates Alpenglow upgrade, cuts transaction finality to 150ms

solana chart

Solana has successfully activated its Alpenglow upgrade, a significant enhancement designed to reduce transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to a mere 150 milliseconds. This upgrade, which took place on October 21, 2026, at approximately 13:20 UTC, replaces the TowerBFT consensus mechanism with Votor. The Alpenglow upgrade also moves validator votes off-chain, potentially leading to changes in reported transaction counts without necessarily reflecting a drop in user activity. Market participants are observing how this technological improvement might impact Solana’s performance and user adoption.

Key Takeaways

• The activation of Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade suggests a major technological improvement, potentially enhancing network performance.
• Market pricing implies a 20% increase in the likelihood of Solana reaching $190 in October, reflecting optimism around the upgrade’s impact.
• Exchange activity indicates that the upgrade may have already influenced market sentiment, with some fluctuations in the predicted pricing for Solana.

What to Watch

Observers will be monitoring Solana’s network performance closely following the Alpenglow upgrade to assess any immediate impacts on user activity and transaction speeds. Key indicators to watch include whether the network sustains its reduced finality time and any potential changes in market pricing for Solana. Developments such as regulatory approvals or significant partnerships, like those involving Samsung or Fiserv, could further influence Solana’s price movement. Additionally, any technical issues arising from the upgrade’s implementation could affect market perceptions.
