Michigan State hockey opened the season with a sweep.
The Spartans utilized an impressive second period to pull away from Northern Michigan en route to a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. That victory for Michigan State completed an opening weekend series sweep for the Spartans, with Michigan State beating Northern Michigan on Friday by the score of 6-2.
Michigan State got the scoring started with Jimmy Clark finding the back of the net halfway through the first period. That was the lone goal in the opening frame.
Northern Michigan would tie it up less than two minutes into the second period with their lone goal of the game. After that, though, Michigan State was able to get three goals in the second period to make it 4-1 heading into the final intermission. Ethan Belchetz had the first goal on a power play opportunity. Ryker Lee followed that up with an even strength goal, and Anthony Romani got the next one shorthanded.
Michigan State would add one more game-clinching goal in the third period from Jack Hextall.
Michigan State will now put its 2-0-0 record on the line next week in a road game at RIT. Faceoff from Rochester, N.Y. is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET on Saturday. That game will be available to watch via Flohockey.
