Seventy-three cyclists took part in “Pedal to Pandal 2026” in Cooch Behar on Tuesday, spreading the message of eco-friendly mobility and healthy living during the festive season and reviving the nostalgia of cycling from one Durga Puja pandal to another.
Once, cycling through the town with friends to visit Durga Puja pandals was an integral part of the festive experience for many.
However, with the growing use of motorised vehicles, the tradition gradually faded.
“The initiative was taken to rekindle those childhood memories and highlight the benefits of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport, and to curb air pollution during the puja days,” said Purbachal Dasgupta, a former teacher and thespian of the town.
The event was organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Fit India, Startup Foundation and Purba Bardhaman Cycling Club, with support from the Cooch Behar Cycle Community.
The ride began at Rajbari Park, where social worker and physically challenged Asif Iqbal, seated in his wheelchair, flagged off the cyclists.
In keeping with the festive spirit of Durga Puja, all participants were provided with yellow kurtas and refreshments. The sight of cyclists dressed in matching yellow attire riding through the town added a colourful touch to the occasion.
Starting from Rajbari Park, the cyclists passed through the Rajbari area, Sagar Dighi, Debibari and Madanbari before crossing Harish Pal Chowpathi and returning to the starting point.
“These days, people rely more on cars and two-wheelers to travel to Puja pandals. We wanted to encourage the residents to consider cycling as an alternative. It's healthy and pollution-free,” Dasgupta, who played the role of ride captain, said.
