The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on the faithful to pray for Pope Leo XIV as he prepares to undergo lung surgery.
CBCP President Archbishop Gilbert Garcera appealed after Pope Leo XIV announced that he would undergo surgery to remove a small lung growth found during his recent checkup.
“I ask my brother bishops and our priests to offer Holy Mass for his successful operation and speedy and complete recovery. I likewise invite our religious communities, families, and all the faithful to offer the Holy Rosary, their daily sacrifices, and acts of charity for his healing,” Garcera said in a statement.
“Let us pray that the Lord may guide his surgeons and all who care for him, sustain him with strength and peace, and restore him to health as he continues to shepherd the universal Church,” he added.
During his weekly Sunday prayer, the Pope said the growth was "well-contained" and had been spotted early. The Vatican did not say whether the nodule is believed to be malignant.
A nodule on the lung is a small, localized lesion that can be benign. The American Thoracic Society says fewer than 5% of lung nodules overall prove cancerous, although risk rises with age, size, and other factors such as smoking.
“With filial love and confidence in God’s mercy, we entrust our Holy Father to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady, Health of the Sick, pray for Pope Leo XIV,” Garcera said.
The Diocese of Calbayog earlier called on the people to pray for the successful surgery and speedy recovery of Pope Leo XIV.
"May the Lord guide the hands of his doctors, grant him a successful surgery, and bless him with strength, healing, and a speedy recovery," Calbayog diocese said. —LDF, GMA News
