Agartala, October 13, 2026: Tripura Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury has called for the unity of all anti-BJP democratic and secular forces in the state to launch a collective movement for ensuring free and fair elections and creating a healthy political environment.
Chaudhury said that while electoral strategies among opposition parties might differ, they should unite on fundamental issues concerning electoral integrity, including proper preparation of voter lists and ensuring fairness in the electoral process.
Referring to the recent meetings of the CPI(M) Central Committee and the INDIA bloc’s programme in Delhi, Chaudhury said the Left parties had participated in the joint initiative alongside the Congress, Samajwadi Party, RJD and other opposition parties.
He said the CPI(M) Central Committee had decided to pursue a united nationwide struggle against the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the new law governing the Election Commission, which the party alleges gives the ruling party excessive control.
Highlighting the participation of Left leaders and representatives of student and youth organisations in the Delhi programme, Chaudhury referred to Neha Bara and Aishe Ghosh, who joined prominent opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Supriya Sule, M.A. Baby and Akhilesh Yadav.
On the possibility of similar cooperation in Tripura, Chaudhury acknowledged that preliminary discussions on the issue had not yet taken place. However, he said the cooperation among opposition parties at the national level could provide a basis for joint action in the state on matters of electoral integrity.
“Seat-sharing becomes meaningless if the voter list is not properly prepared and the electoral process is not conducted fairly,” he said, stressing that ensuring a credible electoral process should take priority.
Chaudhury said the objective was to create an atmosphere in Tripura where all secular, democratic and anti-BJP forces could come together and launch a collective movement to safeguard electoral fairness and promote a healthy political environment.
