South Africa is set to experience contrasting weather conditions on Monday, with severe thunderstorms forecast in KwaZulu-Natal, widespread rain expected in parts of the Eastern Cape and sweltering temperatures predicted in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal, cautioning residents about possible flooding, hail, infrastructure damage and hazardous driving conditions.
The warning is valid for Sunday through Monday.
According to SAWS, a surface trough over the central parts of South Africa is expected to trigger surface convergence over the KZN interior, bringing isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers today and tomorrow.
The storms could cause localised damage to infrastructure and settlements, as well as flooding on susceptible roads and bridges.
SAWS said cloudy and cool conditions were expected along the eastern and southern coasts of SA.
“Elsewhere, conditions are expected to be partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers possible over the central and eastern parts of the country. Rain is expected to be more widespread in the Eastern Cape on Monday,” the weather service said.
While KZN braces for severe thunderstorms, other parts of the country are expected to experience contrasting weather conditions.
The Eastern Cape is forecast to receive widespread rain in places on Monday, while the central and eastern parts of the country could see scattered showers and thundershowers.
In Gauteng, warm to hot conditions are expected, with Johannesburg forecast to reach around 31°C.
Meanwhile, parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga are expected to experience sweltering temperatures. Polokwane could reach 34°C, while temperatures in Mbombela may climb to around 39°C.
Along the south-western coast, Cape Town is expected to remain considerably cooler, with a forecast high of around 18°C.
