The caretaker minister of information and telecommunications in Eastern Equatoria State, Akileo Mboya Peter Anyanga, has urged mobile telephone operators to expand network coverage to underserved communities and restore inactive network towers ahead of South Sudan’s anticipated elections.
He made the call in Torit on Monday during a meeting with telecommunications company representatives led by Isaac Nimeri Oliwa, Digitel’s coordinator in Eastern Equatoria, who spoke on behalf of other network operators.
The minister said the state government would work with telecommunications companies to identify areas without reliable network services and develop plans to improve connectivity.
“Communication is one of the essential, basic services that are necessary for the life of our citizens,” Mboya said, urging operators to continue providing services despite the financial and operational challenges they face.
He said the government plans to convene a strategic meeting with telecommunications companies to map areas requiring new installations and identify existing towers that could be restored.
The minister cited some non-functional Zain towers as infrastructure that could be assessed for possible reconnection. He also urged Digitel to expand its services beyond Torit and other major towns, specifically mentioning Kapoeta as an area requiring improved network coverage.
Mboya said stronger telecommunications services would support businesses, improve access to information and help authorities communicate with communities in remote areas.
He also called for improved connectivity along the state’s international borders, describing communication services as important for security and coordination.
The minister linked the need for expanded network coverage to preparations for the anticipated elections, saying reliable communication would help citizens access information and exercise their civic rights peacefully.
Oliwa said telecommunications companies were ready to work with the state government to improve services and address communication challenges. He said the courtesy visit was intended to strengthen cooperation between the operators and the ministry.
No specific timeline, funding commitments, or targets for network expansion were announced during the meeting.
