After days of tension and uncertainty surrounding the position of the Ger Hasidic movement ahead of the elections for the 26th Knesset, the long-awaited announcement was published this morning on the front page of the movement's newspaper, Hamodia.
The official statement, published under the heading "In the Name of His Holiness, Our Master, the Gerrer Rebbe, May He Live a Long and Good Life," calls on all members of the Hasidic movement:
"As the elections approach, I wish to ask all members of our community, may they live long, to vote for the United Torah Judaism and Shabbat list, whose symbol is Gimel, Agudat Yisrael. May the Almighty help ensure that through this, the honor of Heaven will be increased."
However, beyond the actual publication of the instruction to go to the polls, veteran Ger Hasidim who are well acquainted with election campaigns know how to read between the lines. The difference between this wording and the directives issued during previous elections is glaring.
In contrast to a longstanding tradition in which the Ger Hasidic movement served as the operational and organizational spearhead of United Torah Judaism, operating well-oiled campaign headquarters and mobilizing thousands of activists around the clock, the situation this time is entirely different.
The current announcement is limited to a basic request to vote. It contains no call or instruction to campaign, mobilize, or work during the coming week and a half to strengthen the party's electoral prospects and bring the broader public to the polls.
The absence of a campaign headquarters and the lack of an active push to mobilize voters have raised serious concerns in political circles that a significant proportion of Ger Hasidim may interpret the limited announcement as merely a "minimum directive."
This could result in some voters simply choosing to stay home on Election Day, despite the vague call to vote.
For a Hasidic movement accustomed to iron discipline and intensive political activity, this represents a dramatic change in the political atmosphere.
Within Degel HaTorah, officials are not particularly impressed by the watered-down announcement, but they are making it clear that the situation on the ground will carry a direct political price.
Senior United Torah Judaism officials have delivered an unequivocal message: If Ger Hasidim indeed take the opportunity to stay home and display indifference on Election Day, there will be immediate and far-reaching consequences for the distribution of positions, ministerial portfolios, and coalition resources after the elections.
"The ballot boxes in the haredi strongholds will speak for themselves. Everything is transparent and visible to everyone," the officials told Arutz Sheva-Israel National News.
"There is nowhere to hide. Failure to vote will have consequences," they warned.
