The Punjab government has decided to prohibit items fitted with concealed cameras and recording devices, including pens, eyeglasses and watches, citing concerns over privacy and the misuse of personal information.
In a statement on Monday, the Punjab Home Department said the move aims to protect citizens, particularly women and children, from covert surveillance. The department warned that the use, purchase and sale of spying and covert electronic devices would invite strict legal action, with illegal use potentially resulting in severe penalties.
The department said it had received complaints about hidden recording devices being used for illegal surveillance, harassment and blackmail.
Punjab Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi told Dawn that authorities would issue a formal notification to implement the ban within a few days. He said officials announced the decision in advance to give people time to dispose of the prohibited items.
Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court (LHC) is hearing a public interest petition challenging the unregulated import and sale of smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones. The petition raises concerns about privacy, personal dignity and national security.
The petitioner’s counsel told the court that Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses were available online and in Lahore shops despite Pakistan not being officially listed as a market for the product.
