LeBron James’ connection to Philadelphia stretches back nearly 24 years before he made his home debut for the 76ers, with the NBA legend once starring in a high school game at the city’s famous Palestra arena.
James was still an 18-year-old prospect when St. Vincent–St. Mary High School faced Strawberry Mansion in December 2002. The future NBA superstar scored 28 points as his team secured an emphatic 85-47 victory.
Now beginning a new chapter with the Sixers, James has another opportunity to experience the passion of Philadelphia’s basketball fans from the home side.
LeBron James once drew comparisons to Kobe Bryant in Philadelphia
The high school game was organised by Jeremy Treatman, who had watched James play at a tournament in Delaware and wanted Philadelphia fans to see the young star for themselves.
Treatman, who had been an assistant coach at Lower Merion during Kobe Bryant’s high school career, was already convinced James had something special.
Recalling his first impression, Treatman said: “I think I just saw somebody as good as, if not better than Kobe.”
The game at the Palestra sold out, with Treatman claiming that around 1,000 additional spectators managed to get inside. James delivered a performance to remember, finishing with eight rebounds, five assists and seven steals alongside his 28 points.
Allen Iverson was also reportedly in attendance as the highly rated teenager showcased the talent that would eventually make him one of basketball’s biggest names.
James reflected on that experience during his introductory press conference as a Philadelphia 76er, explaining that he was familiar with the intensity of the city’s supporters.
He said: “It’s been like, OK, we respect the way you play the game because we know the game and we know the history of the game and we’ve seen so many players play. But we hate you, you know like, you’re not with us and we hate you. But I love that, I actually really thrive under that circumstance.”
James also recalled his previous appearance at the Palestra, adding: “I actually came here in high school as well and played at the Palestra my senior year. And it was that same type of atmosphere, you know. Happy to be on this side, though.”
His first home appearance for Philadelphia saw the 76ers beat Cleveland 114-106. James finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as he began settling into life with his new team.
