Berlin, October 19th, 2026 (The Berlin Spectator) – The former Blücherplatz in Berlin’s Kreuzberg borough now is Eva-Mamlok-Platz. Located in front of the State Library, the square was renamed in commemoration of the anti-fascist resistance fighter Eva Mamlok.
Officials inaugurated the location by putting up a sign with information about the Jewish woman who started taking action against the fascists who governed Nazi Germany at a very young age. She was 14 years old when she wrote the words “Nieder mit Hitler!” (“Down with Hitler!”) on a roof of a department store at Hallesches Ufer.
“Eva Mamlok was a Jewish woman from Kreuzberg who courageously defied the Nazi dictatorship even as a teenager”, District Mayor Clara Herrmann stated. “Eva-Mamlok-Platz makes the Jewish and female resistance visible in our borough and gives it a permanent place in our culture of remembrance.” The commemoration was a mandate for the present, a call to consistently stand up against antisemitism, Herrmann said.
Two years ago, an exhibition about Jewish female resistance fighters led to the foundation of a local initiative with the goal to name the square after Eva Mamlok. In June of last year, the district assembly in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg decided to approve the request.
Because of the renaming decision, one store and inhabitants in 31 households at the square need to have their addresses changed, but they will not be charged the usual fees. On Google Maps, the new name Eva-Mamlok-Platz was not yet marked on Sunday.
When the Nazis discovered Eva Mamlok’s resistance network in 1941, she was arrested and deported to the Riga Ghetto. From there, she was taken to the Stutthof concentration camp, where she died at age 26.
Years before, from 1935 to 35, she was incarcerated at the Moringen concentration camp in Lower Saxony, for laying down flowers on the graves of the murdered founders of the communist party (KPD), Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. In 1939, Mamlok gave birth to her daughter Tana. A year later, the Nazis started abusing her as a forced laborer.
Until this past weekend, the square was named after Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742–1819) who fought Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation. The adjacent street Blücherstrasse still carries his name.
