The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, tasked journalists to use artificial intelligence to authenticate stories before amplifying it.
Abdullahi said this is important because people no longer believe in what they see or read because artificial intelligence can manufacture convincing falsehoods that can be hard to separate from the truth.
He said the same technology that used to distort reality can be used to address those challenges as well.
“Today in an AI age, it is very difficult to believe what we see. So, looking at that, today everything can be a fact, and that makes us doubt every other thing we see.
“For us, the greatest contribution AI can give to the newsroom is not generating faster breaking news. But if we can use AI to get people to believe what they see.
“So I believe you are going to use AI in your newsroom for verification, for amplifying authenticity, for letting people trust what they see. We want to see you using AI to verify everything.
“We believe your team is going to use the AI responsibly and ethically to propagate trust in the country,” he said.
