Strategy, the Bitcoin treasury company run by Michael Saylor, has overtaken JPMorgan in trading volume. That makes MSTR the 19th most-traded stock in the US.
JPMorgan is a bank with a market value north of $950 billion. Strategy is a company that mostly holds Bitcoin.
The numbers behind the trading frenzy
Strategy Inc. trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker MSTR. It was formerly known as MicroStrategy.
In mid-2026, MSTR regularly moved between 15 and 25 million shares a day. On several days in August 2026, volume climbed to nearly 49 million shares.
The dollar value of that activity ranged from $1.5 billion to $3.9 billion.
The 19th-place ranking is not even the stock’s high-water mark. On peak days in 2026, MSTR reached 10th place in trading volume among all US stocks.
Strategy’s market capitalization ranged from $38 billion to $50 billion over the period. JPMorgan’s sits above $950 billion.
Why traders can’t stop touching MSTR
Strategy has built more than 845,000 BTC in holdings, at an estimated acquisition cost exceeding $63 billion.
The company funds those purchases by issuing stock. It has raised over $5.6 billion through preferred share offerings alone, on top of other equity sales.
The result is a stock that behaves less like a software company and more like a leveraged bet on Bitcoin’s price. Traders who want crypto exposure through a regular brokerage account have a ready-made option.
MSTR’s 30-day historical volatility hit around 64% in mid-2026.
Then there is turnover. MSTR’s turnover ratio has far exceeded that of traditional banking names like Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan.
A stock built for the Bitcoin crowd
Each new purchase ties the company more tightly to the price of the asset it holds. When Bitcoin moves, MSTR tends to move with it, and often further.
Periods of heightened Bitcoin volatility have repeatedly pushed MSTR into the same volume tier as the largest names in finance. Sometimes it lands above them, as it did against JPMorgan.
What this means for investors
A stock that trades billions of dollars a day is easy to get into and out of, which matters to large institutions and active retail traders alike.
A 64% volatility reading means sharp moves cut both ways, and a stock that amplifies Bitcoin’s gains will also amplify its drawdowns.
Strategy’s continued preferred and common stock issuance keeps the Bitcoin purchases going, but it also expands the share count and ties the company’s capital strategy to market conditions.
