A night that should have been about basketball became an uncomfortable return to the headlines for Britt McHenry, the former ESPN reporter who now works as a press adviser in President Donald Trump's administration.
McHenry, 40, attended Wednesday's Washington Wizards game against the Milwaukee Bucks at Capital One Arena, where an argument with nearby spectators escalated into a drink-throwing confrontation.

Footage obtained by TMZ shows McHenry exchanging words with fans before throwing a beverage toward someone seated behind her, prompting loud boos and demands that she leave the section.
The incident has attracted considerable attention because of McHenry's government position and her previous career in sports television, although questions remain about what triggered the argument.
What happened to Britt McHenry at Wizards game?
The confrontation unfolded during Washington's 128-116 victory over Milwaukee, with McHenry attending alongside a male companion.
According to TMZ, sources close to McHenry claimed that spectators behind the pair had been making inappropriate comments about Winnie Harlow, the model engaged to Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma.
Kuzma previously played for Washington, giving his appearance against the Wizards additional significance.
Those sources alleged that McHenry challenged the remarks before becoming the target of misogynistic comments herself.
A second video subsequently published by TMZ showed spectators shouting at McHenry while an usher attempted to address the situation.
Someone behind her then appeared to throw a drink in her direction, prompting McHenry to pick up a cup and throw it back toward the crowd.
The footage confirms the exchange of drinks, although the competing explanations surrounding the initial confrontation remain disputed.
Why was Britt McHenry booed and escorted from seat?
As the argument intensified, nearby spectators began chanting for McHenry to leave, with some directing insults toward the former broadcaster.
McHenry eventually made her way through the stands while fans booed and threw rally towels in her direction.
Rather than responding angrily to the reception, she was filmed waving and blowing kisses before another confrontation with arena security personnel.
Although initial reports described McHenry as being escorted out, sources close to her disputed that characterization, claiming she left voluntarily and met her companion afterward.
Who is Britt McHenry and what does she do for President Trump?
McHenry built her reputation as a sports journalist, working for ESPN before leaving the network during its widespread layoffs in 2017.
She later moved into political commentary, appearing on Fox Nation and other conservative media platforms before announcing her appointment as a State Department press adviser in September 2026.
Her latest controversy has also renewed attention on a 2015 incident in which ESPN suspended her after video emerged showing her insulting an employee at a towing company.
McHenry subsequently apologized for that confrontation and later disputed the way the footage had been presented.
The circumstances surrounding Wednesday's altercation remain contested, and no official disciplinary action has been announced in connection with the incident.
Nevertheless, the viral footage has placed McHenry under renewed public scrutiny just weeks after beginning her government role.
