The first game of the 2026 Fall Classic was a nailbiter, with Milwaukee using some timely hits, excellent pitching, and a tense ninth inning to survive a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay. It was the Brewers’ first World Series game in 44 years, and—much to the pleasure of the home crowd—they fortunately slammed the door on their first World Series win since then as well. It had been over 16,000 days ago! My parents were barely married at that point, and I’m older than most of the players at this point. So yeah, it’s been a little while. Congrats to the Brew Crew, who really needed to win the Jacob Misiorowski vs. Nick Martinez start that was closer than it should’ve been. Now, we’ll see if the Rays counter by winning their own apparent mismatch on paper.*
*This is no shade to Logan Henderson, who I very much like. But we’ve soon too much of what Drew Rasmussen can do when he’s rolling.
Today on the site, Peter will recap the World Series opener, Michael will run through the third week of Yankees prospect action in the Arizona Fall League (shouts to Dax Kilby), and Nick will celebrate the 139th birthday of the Deadball Era’s Hugh High. Later, Andrés will take Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner to task on his blame game and John will examine where the Yankees’ budget stands as the offseason begins.
