President William Ruto's sister turned heads at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret on Wednesday, arriving in an all-white lace dress that immediately set social media ablaze.
She accessorised with dark shades, a small pink clutch and a Kenyan flag scarf draped around her neck, striking the perfect balance between elegance and patriotism for a national holiday.
A matriarch takes centre stage
She was not walking alone. By her side was Mama Sarah Cheruiyot, the President's mother, who looked every bit the family matriarch she is. Mama Sarah wore a gold lace shawl layered over a green and orange kitenge, topped with a cream wide-brimmed hat featuring flower detail, and carried her signature beaded walking stick.
The two women made their way down the red carpet together, flanked by military aides and close family aide Farouk Kibet's security team, as the crowd cheered and cameras captured every step.
Mama Sarah, who rarely appears at public functions outside Sugoi, was escorted to the VIP section, where she sat alongside First Lady Rachel Ruto and other dignitaries.
Kenyans react online
The sister's simple but polished look quickly became a talking point across social media platforms, with many Kenyans noting a striking family resemblance to the president himself.
The Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret carry particular significance this year. It is the first time the national holiday has been hosted in the President's home region, with Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties jointly organising the event, which drew a crowd of around 15,000 people.
Mama Sarah, now in her late 70s, has long been considered the quiet backbone of the Ruto household. Deeply respected in Sugoi for her devout and steadfast nature, she rarely courts the spotlight. On Wednesday, though, she was very much at the centre of it, walking alongside her daughter in front of the entire nation as it tuned in to watch the celebrations live.
