Gunmen have reportedly killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and abducted a businessman in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew recently imposed in parts of the area following repeated attacks.
A community member, Lawrence Tabitha, said the officer, a Deputy Superintendent of the NSCDC, was riding his motorcycle near his residence when he was shot by the armed men.
“The deceased, a Deputy Superintendent of the NSCDC, was shot near his residence while riding his motorcycle,” Tabitha told newsmen.
He explained that the gunmen had abducted a businessman who deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser before the fatal encounter with the officer.
“The gunmen had earlier abducted a businessman who deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser,” he said.
According to Tabitha, the officer’s motorcycle headlight exposed the attackers’ movements as they attempted to escape with the businessman, prompting them to open fire.
“The attackers opened fire on the NSCDC officer after the headlight of his motorcycle exposed their movement as they were fleeing the area with the abducted businessman,” he added.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents, who are concerned about continued attacks in the community despite the curfew and other security measures.
Tabitha called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to step up efforts to protect residents and secure the release of the abducted businessman.
He said the recurring incidents had left residents worried about the safety of communities across Pushit District.
According to him, other communities affected by repeated attacks include Vodni, Sabon Gari and Nchiya.
He also urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach security operatives for confirmation and comment were unsuccessful.
